How accurate are the Alexa numbers?
The Alexa reports give a view of site traffic and because they are available and constantly updated, we show the Alexa graphs. The known issues with Alexa reporting are however huge and should be noted before drawing conclusions from Alexa numbers.
- Only traffic from users with the Alexa toolbar installed is counted. Who is installing Alexa, where and why? This is definitely not a random sample of real traffic.
- Alexa toolbar does NOT work with online gaming clients. Opening your PartyPoker client or InterCasino client, connecting and playing would not be counted.
At best Alexa may provide an insight into trends within a site's traffic. A spike in traffic may be indicative of marketing efforts at a site, increased test activity or a limited launch. A subsequent drop-off in traffic does not necessarily predict the success or failure of past marketing efforts. Comparisions of rankings between sites is much harder to interpret or to draw useful conclusions.
